Good for workout

5 out of 5 stars

Good for workout
I needed a set of individual dumbell bars for a lighter weight workout set. These work great and are less than half the price from the big box stores.

    Quick Review: These dumbbell bars are great. They're heavy duty and seem like they can ensure some punishment. They seem equal in weight, and the star screw-on collars work pretty good. They can come loose while working out, so if you're doing an exercise where you're only using one at a time, I'd double up on the collars to make it a bit safer in terms of weights becoming loose.

    I am an experienced bodybuilder and use these at a second home in the middle of the woods. They work perfectly with my (awesome!) cement-filled standard (1") plates. Obviously these will not work with Olympic plates which require a 2" diameter bar. My only complaint is that the grip texture is different between the two – one is more aggressive than the other which, while not a huge deal, still bothers me. I prefer aggressive texture (but not sharp) to aid in grip and one is noticeably less-aggressive. Considering what I paid and what my expectations were, I'm not deducting a star for this 🙂

    These dumbbell handles are really solid and well made. They do not have any cheap plastic on them, so when you are tightening up the collars you can tighten them really well and not worry about anything breaking. The handles have knurling on them, which I like and they feel comfortable. The handles are thinner than other dumbbell handles I used and that will affect how they feel in your hands, so make sure you are aware of the handle size of the dumbbells you are currently using so that you can see how these compare thickness wise. The good thing for me was that I just added a set of Thick Grips to the DB handles which fit perfectly. This allows you to use the DBs but get some grip work in at the same time. I would definitely order again.

    I ordered these after my acient rusty dumbells finally broke. After using them for a week, and putting them through their paces, I feel I can review them accurately. The whole dumbell is one bar, which feels very high quality. I haven't loaded more than 50lbs on these at once, but I have no doubt they could handle more. The collars are pretty good, but they can sometimes unscrew a bit, which could be very dangerous. Just check them in between every set and all should be well. One problem some people might have is getting the collars to fit with the weight on. If you have a lot of smaller plates (2.5/5lb), you could wind up being limited to how much weight you can stack on. I got lucky, with my max load fitting just at the edge, so make sure you have some larger plates if you plan to go heavy. I would also recommend using some fingerless workout gloves, as the handles on these will tear up your palms.

    All in all I highly recommend these for those that need a new pair, or don't own any at all. If you can get the collars to stay put, and you have some gloves to you, I see no better option for a super cheap entry pair. They're sturdy, heavy, and should last a very long time. To me, that's all I want and need!

    I am 56 years old been around weight lifting off and on for most of my life in some for or another. I have around 600 LBS of standard weights. 165 LBS Olympic weights. Until last year I had not worked out in about 6 years. I was assisting my wife with a project mind you my wife is 15 years younger then myself. I found I had lost my upper body strength. I told my wife then and there I was going to get back in shape. My cast iron was on the back porch.
    Purchased a Cheap bench and power tower to replace the ones we sold at the time. Started working out. I purchase a couple of these star type dumbbell bars to replace a few cheap one I had in my GYM. I do not like to change dumbbell weights when I exercises. But I cannot justify a complete dumbbell set since many would set and collect dust.
    This set was purchased so I could do calf exercises and for that it does what I need. I load 80 to 100 LBS cast Iron hold in one hand and do a one leg calf raise. Others I use for Curls and such.

    For all the exercising I do, I am a bit lazy when comes to changing the amount of weight during my dumbbell work. Hence, the need for another set of dumbbell bars. I now do dumbbell flies for my shoulder work. My doctor has nagged me about my rotator cuffs and I finally listened. So, no more shoulder presses for me. Bummer. But, flies work and as long as I can workout with a decent rhythm, I'm happy. This means different loads for the different deltoids and why I now have more of this type of bar. I can set them up before a workout and then not have to pause between the need to use a greater or lessor weight. I even have a dumbbell that I use just for overhead chest extension. I can jump right into chest day. I'm happy.

    I was drawn in by the great price – but it isn't super quality. The handles are shorter than my older spin lock bars. There is a little chrome flaking going on and now I have to vacuum my home gym floor every week to keep it clean of shiny flecks (I don't even change out the weight plates – I leave 40lbs on it all the time. I don't understand why it is shedding!). I added a rubber washer to the inside weight stop to keep the spin locks from coming undone every time I pick up the dumbbell. Additionally, one of the metal stops is off kilter – it must be welded crooked? It isn't severe, but it makes the weights lean wrong when they are stacked against the stop. With three plates it looks a little like this:

    |||–\

    It's not THAT bad, or I would have sent them back. But it's there and I'm not really pleased about it. I won't buy another of this brand.

    On the plus side, it does the job with regard to holding the plates on the bar and it functions as a dumbell. Good enough for the price paid – I guess.

    With the difficultly in getting dumbbells these days getting these has been helpful. They are a bit long for smaller weights but the length is great for putting upwards of 70 lbs on each bar for incline press and things of the like. They main thing is don't drop them like a norm set of dumbbells and the nut does loosen during the repetitive motion of curling or ground-to-overhead lifting.
